Operating Principle
The working principle of a cone crusher is straightforward yet highly effective, relying on the coordinated action of several key components to crush material:
- The Mantle: This large, circular steel component is positioned within the crushing chamber. Driven by an eccentric motion, the mantle performs a gyrating movement, compressing the feed material against the stationary bowl liner.
- The Bowl Liner: As the stationary counterpart to the mantle, the bowl liner forms the lower section of the crushing chamber. Material is crushed between the moving mantle surface and this fixed liner as the mantle gyrates.
- The Eccentric Shaft: This primary rotating shaft transmits the drive force and generates the critical eccentric motion. Its rotation causes the attached mantle to gyrate within the bowl liner, repeatedly compressing and breaking down the trapped material to reduce its size.
- The Hydraulic System: Modern cone crushers often incorporate a hydraulic system. This allows for automatic adjustment of the crushing chamber’s closed-side setting (CSS), enabling precise control over the final product size. Crucially, it also protects the crusher from damage by maintaining the optimal gap between the mantle and bowl liner, even under fluctuating load conditions.
- The Drive Mechanism: An electric motor powers the drive mechanism, which transmits torque to rotate the eccentric shaft. This rotation initiates the gyrating action of the mantle, driving the entire crushing process.
In essence: Material enters the crushing chamber at the top. The rotating eccentric shaft causes the mantle to gyrate eccentrically against the stationary bowl liner. This action repeatedly compresses the material between the mantle and bowl liner walls, fracturing it until the pieces are small enough to pass through the discharge opening at the bottom. The hydraulic system continuously optimizes the crushing gap for efficiency and protection.

Types of Cone Crusher
Compound Cone Crusher: Compound cone crusher combine the features of both standard and short head cone crusher, providing versatility and better overall performance. They are used for a wide range of materials, from soft to hard rocks.
